Weekly Sketch – Decorative Elephants – 23/01/2016

I’ve had three little wooden painted decorative elephants since I was a child; I have no idea where they came from or how they came to me. And no one in my family remembers either. Anyway I am very fond of them, I used to make up stories as a child that they were a family and went on adventures and travels together. The blue one is slightly bigger and so is the Dad; the red one is the Mum – her eye used to made me think of make-up,long eyelashes and eyeliner; and so the orange one is the baby. They still stand in that order on my shelf after all these years and I wouldn’t like to change it.

Letter G Linocut Design

I have joined a linocut group on facebook, where members can sign up to print a linocut letter for different themed alphabets. I have chosen the letter ‘G’ for a freestyle alphabet, image size 15×15 cm. The deadline for the final image is the end of January. Here is an insight into how I came up with my final design: as a starting point I already had the idea that it would be be a graphic image made up of coloured triangles where the letter would be part of the background pattern but at the same time different enough to ‘read’ as a letter; I also limited myself to 3 colours as I don’t have much time to execute the print before the deadline. It is interesting to see that the second design settled the form and colour of the letter, but it took another three designs to settle on the background and a realisation that for clarity the letter had to be very different to the patterned background. The letter only shares the triangle form with the background. I really like this image and I might carry on with a whole alphabet in this style.

Weekly Sketch – Long Eared Hare – 04/01/2016

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you all enjoyed the festive break.

Will this be the year I actually post a sketch every week? can you bear the sheer anticipation of finding out? you can only watch this space.

So here is the first quick pen sketch of the year of a long eared hare. I’d like to do a hare print this year, so there will be lots more hare images from me.

Weekly Sketch – Pattern Watermelon Forms – 19/07/2015

I am still playing around with pattern, concentrating on watermelon forms; a half circle and u shape. These are two rough sketches in pen and watercolour pencil.
