Weekly Sketch – Pattern Watermelon Form – 11/07/2015

I was playing around with pattern today, these two rough layouts make me think of watermelons because of the colours and half circle forms. I am obviously telling myself to go by some melons to refresh myself with in this wonderfully hot weather.

Weekly Sketch – A Pair of Starlings – 04/01/2015

This year I really must try and make my ‘weekly sketch’ post, a weekly sketch post. So here is the first one an illustration of a pair of starlings in the grass, drawn with fountain pens in black ink.

Weekly Sketch – Marigold – 04/11/2014

I am working on a new design for a linocut print of a marigold flower. I grow marigolds on my balcony yearly; I just love their golden orange colour. I want a bold graphic image to reflect the boldness of the flower. I have almost resolved the image, just a few more variations in mind and then to cut the lino and print it.

Weekly Sketch – Jay – 26/05/2014

I find birds fascinating; I have made artists’ books about swifts and crows containing poems, and I have always wanted to do a print series on birds. So here is the start: sketches of a Jay; in black pen, oil pastel and ink; in charcoal; and in black pen.

Weekly Sketch – Flowers – 23/03/2014

Quick sketch of different flowers using a fountain pen. I was trying for simple flower motifs; but ended up drawing some in too much detail. I often draw in pen, as I tend to just go for it, knowing mistakes have to be adapted or worked in or just left alone. I am a more hesitant sketcher using pencil; if I end up erasing parts of an image, I will obsess about correcting it, and perhaps get stuck in that moment. I like seeing my mistakes and working on new images around them.
