Weekly Sketch – Cactus Collage – 26/03/2017

I’ve been playing around with painting textures and patterns on paper; then used them to make this cactus collage. The very bright green small cactus arm is one of those coffee cup cardboard holders; I used it to print the green zig-zags on the cactus arm behind it, then decided I quite liked it just as it was painted.

Pear Pop Linocuts

Here are some of the final prints of ‘Pear Pop’ linocuts with added collaged leaves after printing. I am planning an edition of 10 for each pear design. These linocuts are companion pieces to my ‘Apple Pop‘ linocut from last year.

Printed with Caligo relief water-based ink on specialist printing paper, Zerkall 150 gsm. The colour collaged paper is Japanese straw silk paper.

I will be listing them in my Etsy and Artfinder online shops soon. Apple Pop linocuts are available in these shops now.

Printing Pear Pop Linocuts

At last I’ve been able to start printing some new images this year; these are the first prints of ‘Pear Pop’ linocut with chine–collé (collaged paper), companion pieces to ‘Apple Pop‘ linocuts from last year.

I do intend to add more collaged leaves to these prints once the ink has dried – similar to the ‘Apple Pop’ prints.

Weekly Sketch – Oak Leaves & Acorn Collage – 01/12/2016

I’ve been a bit quiet on the blog lately due to preparing for two Christmas Fairs. I’ll be at the Horniman Museum this weekend, it looks like it will be a very merry affair and it is free, you can find all the details here: http://www.horniman.ac.uk/visit/events/horniman-christmas-fair

I’ve been playing with drawn collage which is a good way of finding out how to balance different elements of your picture. I think this collage of oak leaves and acorn could make for a bold linocut print, what do you think?

Weekly Sketch – Aloe Collage – 26/08/2016

I really enjoyed making this collage of my potted aloe plant (aloe variegata). Here you can see a watercolour I made of this plant last year – Succulent Splash. It has doubled in size since then.

Weekly Sketch – Dream – 23/05/2016

At last I could put to use a drawing I made of a decorative mirror last year. Perfect as a magic mirror in this collage I have made called ‘Dream’.

Weekly Sketch – Seeing the Sights – 21/01/2016

I thought I’d challenge myself to do some magazine/newspaper collage; not something I usually do. It’s fun, it challenges image making creativity and narrative, loosens you up and stops you getting precious about what you are making. I cut some images I liked from a free magazine I picked up in the week and played around with them until I came up with an idea; a few extra decorative paper cuts, a bit of drawing, and a Photoshop background later and here we are – ‘Seeing the Sights’.  Now I never would have invented this image without the collage play. Silly isn’t it!
