Weekly Sketch – Pompeii – 11/11/2012

In my Weekly Sketch posts I will share the good and bad scribbles that I undertake…

Here is a little pen and ink sketch, executed very quickly from a photograph I took in Pompeii. I am going to be drawing many images from my source photos, familiarizing myself with the architecture, texture and colours of Pompeii. I hope to work towards a print series, but will have to wait and see if some ideas solidify through this exploration of drawing.

  1. Simply gorgeous, Catherine!! I would love to visit Pompeii some day. I’ve been fascinated by Roman architecture and especially the history of Pompeii since first reading about it in my grandparent’s National Geographics.

    • Thanks for your lovely comment Linda! It was pretty amazing to walk on the same streets and enter the same buildings that Romans had occupied once upon a time. I am also really excited as The British Museum here in London is having an exhibition of the objects that were found in Pompeii & Herculaneum in 2013. The objects are not displayed at Pompeii or Herculaneum, which is a shame, rather they are housed in a Naples museum, so I didn’t get to see them on my trip this year. So I am really lucky to get a chance to see them next year in London.
